KELPTEX - Sustainable Textile Fibers from Algae
KELPTEX: Sustainable Textile Fibers from Algae – Energy-Efficient and Circular Innovation
The project "Textile Fibers from 100% Algae Raw Material – Energy-Efficient Harvesting, Extraction, and Textile Production (KELPTEX)" was recently approved for funding by the Swedish Energy Agency. The project aims to develop algae-based textile fibers from seaweed side streams, focusing on resource- and energy-efficient processes. The resulting textile will be dyed using a new algae pigment, and its recyclability will be investigated. The goal is to create a sustainable and circular alternative to traditional fossil- and bio-based fibers while eliminating the need for harmful dyes.
KELPTEX is coordinated by Chalmers Industriteknik and carried out in collaboration with Manatee Biomaterials, MOUNID, and RISE. The project runs from December 2024 to January 2027.
